Refinery 29: Women of SBP

June 12, 2015

Scooter Braun — the man who discovered Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Cody Simpson, and manages more than 30 of the biggest artists in the music industry — has a fairly simple approach to business. "I invest in people," he told Complex magazine, "not just products." He was talking about his decision to financially back Uber, but that ethos also applies to his own artist-management company, SB Projects, which he founded in 2005.

Notably, Braun invests in the often untapped talent of badass women. A 2009 report from Creative & Cultural Skills suggests the music industry is 66% male. In 2013, women made up just 4% of producers listed in the Music Producers Guild. The music industry is still primarily a boys' club.

But at SB Projects, women make up more than 50% of the team. It's almost as if one of the most notable companies in the industry has flipped the stats upside down. “The people of SB Projects are everything," Braun tells Refinery29. "They are our successes and our dreams achieved."

For many of the women at the company, working there is a dream achieved, too. They're doing jobs they never knew existed or never thought were attainable. "The women of SB Projects are capable, intelligent, and passionate businesswomen," Braun says. "For that, I am grateful."

We spoke with nine female SB Projects employees to learn about how they got there, why they wanted to work with Braun, and what it's like to be a woman in the music industry. Here's what they had to say.
